TDW sums this mash-up well:
Coffee commercials from the 50s seem to share a running theme: They all should have ended with “then make it your damn self.”

Buzzfeed captions this video made entirely out of food:
More specifically, cookies, chocolate and all other types of baked goods (yum). This music video, created by Mexican singing duo Jesse & Joy and set to their song “Chocolate”, is extra sweet and well worth the 30 days it took them to film it.

GOOD magazine has a slideshow of pictures depicting America’s relationship with food.

Pictured: Afghan poppy farmer, Zareen (left) stands in his poppy field with son Azim, 8, in Faizabad, Badakshan, Afghanistan, on May 25, 2011. Local authorities in Badakshan use a tractor to destroy cabbage size poppy plants at their early stages as to lessen the burden on the farmer. According to the United Nations Office of Drugs and Crime (UNODC) the cultivation of poppies in the Badakshan region has more than doubled this season. Opium production in Afghanistan has been on the rise since U.S. occupation started in 2001, and more land is now used for opium in Afghanistan than for coca cultivation in Latin America. In 2007, 92% of the opiates on the world market originated in Afghanistan, reportedly amounting to an export value of about $4 billion, with a quarter being earned by opium farmers and the rest going to district officials, insurgents, warlords, and drug traffickers. Let’s start with the first interesting story: A Chicago school has banned packing lunches in hopes of having kids eat school lunch (which they label as more healthy). I wonder how legal this is, but I do know that schools give dozens of choices to eat and may be better in some (not all) cases for kids. (Pictured: NPR - it comes from a slideshow of school foods from around the world)
Also, foreign countries are now buying land in Africa to grow crops for themselves.
And in case you didn’t know the difference between the two:
It makes an important distinction between food loss and food waste. Food losses (the blue portion of the bar) tend to occur due to crumbling infrastructure, harvesting technology, or poorly designed packaging, whereas food waste (the red portion) results from restaurants and people like you and me throwing edible, slightly malformed fruits and vegetables into the trash.

On my agenda:
It’s been a glorious morning. My body is exhausted from the grind of teaching and P90X. My body also is begging me to stretch and do Yoga.
Here is some of what I am thinking about this morning:
Think over why the revolutions have occured in Tunisia, Egypt, and now the showdown in Wisconsin? Much of it shoots back to the economy, food prices, budgets, salaries, pensions, government transparency, and human rights.
While that may be a motley crue of triggers that aren’t homogenous to the naked eye, it may be a scary warning for what more may come from our current state of being.
Dan at FIPL exposes the truly draconian measures in our proposed budget:
This truly shows where too many of our leaders hearts are at. It unfortunately reflects many of the stereotypes our nation unreflectively digests. Think about these:
We take away the dirty Planned Parenthood and we will not only save money but be a more pro-life, Christian nation! We cut out community health and nutritional assistance to use that money in “better” places/ways. We give the breaks to our rich because they create our jobs (shown to be a sham here, here, and here). Anything else i’m missing?
A little creepy? Quite funny.

If you are near the Philly area, go to this Italian market that I highly recommend.
